Building road tunnels is a complex task, but as cities grow, they are being used more and more to provide much needed infrastructure while protecting the land above. The East West Link will include tunnel sections to help protect the inner city, communities and parkland.
Features of the East West Link tunnels
The East West Link tunnels will be three lanes in each direction, with a fully integrated lane use management system to ensure motorist safety and effective incident response.
Typical safety features could also include 24-hour surveillance, automatic incident detection systems, a system for fire suppression and pedestrian access between tunnels.
The tunnel route is largely dependent on the ground conditions in the area, which are being investigated through geotechnical studies. Additionally, the exact route of the tunnels may not be finalised until advice is received from the construction industry after the completion of the East West Link planning process.
